Singam 2 Movie Review

REVIEW: If ‘Singam’ was mass masala, then ‘Singam-2‘ is doubly so. Hari is clear about what entertainment he wants to dole out to his audiences and goes bout delivering it unapologetically. So, we have an introduction item song for Suriya, though it is shown as a cover for his surveillance activity. And soon after, we are shown that though he may have stopped wearing a cop’s uniform, he is still at the top of his game when he easily solves a case of stolen exam question papers. This is followed by an action sequence to show that though he may have taken up a softer job, Duraisingam has not lost his edge in beating up thugs to a pulp, and the opportunity for this arises when a student’s father crashes into the school as the national anthem is being sung during assembly and starts threatening teachers with his thugs.

It is fun to watch a slick commercial film and ‘Singam-2’ doesn’t disappoint, with Suriya in fine form as a cop who can do no wrong. Gone is the small village police station for he is now a DSP. He has the local drug smugglers – Thangaraj (Rahman) and Bhai (Mukesh Rishi) – in sight but is bent on netting the big fish in the form of South African drug cartel kingpin Danny (Danny Sapani). Gone are his uncertainties and doubts (from the first part) about adopting less than fair means for fighting the criminals; what you have now is a meaner Duraisingam, who is focused only on the task at hand.

In keeping with the formula, Hari uses Santhanam to bring in the laughs and allows a much more sober role to Erimalai (Vivekh), who handled the comedy in the first part. Santhanam’s entry, a la ‘Endhiran’, his dream song with Anushka and the ‘Vishwaroopam’ fight sequence are spot on, but the same cannot be said about the other scenes that are intended to be humourous.

Hansika does a neat job in a tailor-made role of school student Sathya, but Anushka is forced to take a back seat even as she reprises her role of Kavya. But she is assured of a role in the next sequel as Kavya is now engaged to be married to Duraisingam.

Thankfully, Suriya isn’t made to roar too much though he does retain the leap and the style of attacking with his paw. What works big time for the movie is the way the director unabashedly goes about framing kickass mass scenes – for example, the way Suriya is forced to don the police uniform or the fight scene in which he single-handedly defends his family from a bunch of killers. That should ensure that ‘Singam-2’ becomes one of the most successful sequels in not only Tamil cinema, but also in the several other languages in which the movie was remade.

Much has been talked about Singam 2 and the public seems to be moving on.
